Midtown Global Market will host a free celebration of Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, on Saturday, October 12 from 5 – 8 p.m. You can enjoy a variety of Indian vendors, dancing, a Kids Talent Exhibition, “lighting of the glow sticks” and traditional storytelling of the origin of Diwali, dining specials at Hot Indian and children’s crafts. Lots to do for the whole family!
Diwali, also known as the Hindu festival of lights, is the largest and most widely celebrated Hindu festival. Originating in India, this holiday is an expression of happiness and the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. The celebration takes place each year in autumn and traditionally lasts five days with the largest celebration on the third day. This holiday is celebrated in India by all ages and traditional activates include fireworks, gift exchanges, storytelling, shopping, candle lighting and a feast.
Candles and clay lamps called diyas are lit and placed on roofs, around front doors and in windows of homes symbolizing positive life and being thankful for health, wealth, knowledge and fame.
